The importance of Speech and Debate

This article explores why public speaking matters, showing how it helps build confidence and communicate ideas clearly.

“Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel” is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, the world famous author of Self-Reliance and The American -Scholar. Futures can be changed, livelihoods can be impacted, and the world can be affected all through the power of speech. Speech and debate not only gives people a voice, but also teaches them the skills of critical thinking and communication: two things which remain important in an ever changing world.

Speech and debate is an activity which allows people, who wouldn’t have a voice otherwise, to express themselves to the world. Whether it’s through events such as Original Oratory, a ten minute persuasive speech, or through an interpretive event such as Dramatic Interpretation or Humorous Interpretation, speech enables people to be themselves and spread messages that are close to them. This ability, the ability to have a voice, is something that changes lives. When people are given a voice, they are no longer constrained by the walls of society, and they can truly make a difference in the world later in life. Celebrities like Chadwick Boseman, Oprah Winfrey, and Zac Efron were all given a voice through the power of speech and debate, and they used this voice to become successful later in life.

It also is an activity which promotes critical thinking and crafting strong arguments. In limited prep events like Extemp and Impromptu, these arguments must not only be solid, but also quick. Good argumentation must also be crafted in debate events like Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum. Speech and Debate teaches people how to express themselves and support what they believe in through reasoning and evidence.

Speech and Debate is the future of America, our nation depends on young people who can speak up and stand up for what they believe in. Supporting us means supporting the future, and supporting a nation of individuals who aren’t afraid to speak up.
